Importing a family from a GEDCOM file

What it does. Reads a GEDCOM file, the standard file almost every

family-tree program can save, and makes a new Family from its people,

relationships and dates.

Why you might use it. You have years of research in Ancestry,

MyHeritage or Findmypast and want a printable TreeLine of it without

typing everyone in again.

Where to find it. TreeLines › Create a Family › Import from GEDCOM.

How to use it.

  1. Save a GEDCOM file from your family-tree program. Need to export a

    GEDCOM first?
on the import page has step-by-step instructions for

    the common programs.
  2. Choose Choose GEDCOM file and pick the file.
  3. Choose Create Family. Your new Family opens with its first TreeLine.

What to expect. Large files take a little while. Dates TreeLine has to

estimate are marked as estimates on the chart, never shown as recorded

facts. To bring later research into the same Family, use Update on

the Family rather than importing again.
