How missing dates are estimated
What it does. A bar needs a start and an end. Where a date is missing,
TreeLine works one out from what is recorded nearby — parents, brothers
and sisters, children, marriages — and draws the bar from that estimate.
How sure it is. Open TreeLine Info › Date Estimation to see each
estimate with its confidence (High, Medium or Low) and a note on
what it was based on.
No death date. For someone with no recorded death, TreeLine assumes a
lifespan. TreeLine Settings › People and labels › Assumed lifespan
sets it in years; left blank (auto), it follows this Family's own
recorded lifespans around that person's era.
What to expect. An estimate only places the bar: your Family's dates
are never changed. With Fading estimated dates on, the fill softens
toward an estimated end. Adding even a rough recorded year replaces the
estimate.
