Earlier ancestors and dated evidence
Not a direct parent? Some records join a person straight to an
ancestor several generations back. In the Person pane › Parents, under
Earlier ancestors and dated evidence, choose Not a direct parent?
beside the father or mother and Save as an earlier ancestor. The chart
then shows a break in the line rather than a direct link. Restore as
direct parent puts it back.
Dated evidence. For someone with no dates, add what you know: a year,
or a period with its first and last year, and the source if you have one
(Add dated evidence). TreeLine draws their bar from it and says how,
for example "Bar drawn c. 1650–1710"; if the evidence cannot be
reconciled, it says so instead of guessing.
What to expect. Saving someone as an earlier ancestor does not change
any other parent. A matching birth date is never treated as evidence on
its own. Each change is saved at once, and the pane confirms what was
saved.
